With more than 7.000 students, 104 laboratories and 750 faculty and staff members, the University of Cyprus (UCY) is a young and rapidly expanding university (established in 1989). There are 23 departments and 13 research units and centres, covering a broad spectrum within the life, social, natural and engineering sciences. It is considered to be the leading university and the most active research institution in Cyprus.
UCY claims significant scholarly production of 3.1 peer-reviewed publications per faculty/year and international recognition of its research place in the Science Citation Index (SCI). Among other distinctions, the UCY was recently ranked 55th worldwide among young Universities of less than 50 years old, according to the Times Higher Education, while according to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, UCY is ranked in the 200 top universities in Europe. At the end of 2017 UCY was participating in 146 research projects, of which 113 EU funded under Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, Life, Cost Action, FP7, Interreg and EU Structural Funds.
UCY contributes to this proposal through the Department of Computer Science. The Department has experienced significant growth over the last few years, and is now home to 22 faculty, with strong groups in artificial intelligence, computer architecture, computer networks, data management, graphics and virtual reality, internet computing, software engineering and theoretical computer science.
